Cartoon Caricature Drawing Show for School Assembly

April 28, 2008

Assembly talk by Artist who show and tell the art of cartoon caricature drawing.

Someone saw me drawing at a shopping mall, as it was closing time, he took my card and called a few days later and engaged me to do a studio caricature of him and his girlfriend. That was my first studio caricature commission. He is a school teacher and Head of Department at Bartley Secondary School. He later engaged us to do one for his boss (principal) who is leaving, by this time we were getting better at studio caricatures.

This time around he called again and insisted that I do an assembly programme for his school. Another first for me. I sincerely thank Mr. Asmadi Mohamad for his appreciation for the art of caricatures and putting me to a higher platform once again.

Note: We established a website specifically for our caricature drawing services in January 2008 at: WWW.CARTOON.SG. More caricatures can be viewed there. Please click here.

Straits Times lifestyle page on baldness as a fashion

I became the cover boy for an article on baldness. How bold is that? It was for the Life section of Straits Times and quite a number of my friends saw it. Its nice to be famous for not showing off. I said my 2 cents worth on choosing to go bald which gave me that 2 minutes of fame. It is like sending a card to everyone reminding them that I am well and alive, though hairless still.

Youth Olympic Mural at Bukit View Secondary School

School students attending graffiti painting workshop in Singapore

Singapore won the bid to host the inaugural youth olympic. A cause for celebration indeed and jubilant expectations abound for the grand event in 2010. Bukit View Secondary School showed their support for the youth olympic games by engaging twenty five of their students to do up a graffiti style mural on their newly comleted amphitheater. Though it rained on two of the three sessions, the students perservered and managed to complete a beautiful mural within the 10 hour programme. The stone gravel wall gave an interesting luminosity to the overall finishing.

Reply: Joint fixture for my art installation

Ravinda Cheema asked a question on my earlier post about my MA graduation show project at: http://kamaldollah.wordpress.com/2007/03/29/graduation-show-ma-contemporary-practice/ Here is a photo to accompany my answer.

I bent the tubes and crudely connect it with a ring. On hindsight, I feel that there could be a better way by replicating the mechanism found in an umbrella.

Since I am revisiting the subject, I might as well add that my installation which opens to almost 4 metres high, fits in my back pack. Please don’t ask me how? It is designed like an umbrella – go figure.

Second Graffiti Workshop at Outram Secondary School

April 11, 2008

Graffiti art lesson in schools conducted by artists

This year’s batch of 25 students assigned to my 15-weeks graffiti workshop is not much different from the previous year. There is somehow the same mix of jokers and dreamers that look alike, but overall they are good kids. I must stress that the principal of this school is a progessive thinker and is supportive of the programme. She dropped by one lesson and told us how this year she does not even have to sell the idea like previously due to the success of last years programme which taught the kids about social issues and responsibility. It is one of the nicer school I’ve worked in and it is also the shooting location for a TV musical ‘Schoolhouse Rockz’ on Kids Central. If you watch closely, you’d probably see some of the damages done by my crew. This workshop is still ongoing so we’ll see if this years batch is better than last years.
