My current group of students learning batik painting at Nafa are six pretty ladies. Which is a natural phenomenon because traditionally batiking is a ladylike skill. During ancient times, a Javanese woman prides herself for being able to produce beautiful batik for herself and the family. However, don’t be discouraged if you are a man, there is really no gender or racial limitation to this technique, just practical preferences. Like cooking, most great chefs are men whilst women does it everyday.
This part-time art enrichment course runs over 8 evening sessions which will conclude on 26th December. It covers basic to intermediate skills in batik painting techniques. If you are keen to sign up for the programme, please enquire with Nafa’s continuing education department or call 6512 4214 / 6512 4216.
Sign up early for the new class which begins on 30th January 2008.

ABN Amro bank commissioned me to create 23 caricatures as trophies for a staff award ceremony. It was an interesting assignment as the award winners were portrayed with a body situation or theme that described their traits or extraordinary work habit. I bet they had a fun-time laughing at each others achievement.

Singapore Prison Service held their staff wellness programme which tied in with the school holidays. Staff brought their children to work, where there were workshops on family wellness and also some special programmes tailored especially for the kids. The 8 to 13 year olds were enlisted into my caricature drawing workshop. I started with an introduction about caricatures and going through cartoon drawing basics, then got them draw caricatures of me while I did colour caricatures of them in under 5 minutes each.
The workshop does not teach drawing per se within a short duration, what it actually does is promote art appreciation and inspire young people to enjoy drawing. The acquisition of skills is a life long pursuit, which begins when the hearts and minds are brimming with passion.

Mapletree Investments own and operate Vivo city, Singapore’s largest retail and lifestyle destination. Obviously, they held their family day event at the rooftop of Vivo city, famous for its big ampitheatre and large garden with several wading pools. I was hired as their caricature artist and drawing quick caricatures non-stop for four hours. It was great fun.

My son is a Spiderman fanatic. So much so, that not a day passed without him bugging us to let him watch his DVD. He went to stay with his grandparents for a few nights which gave me some peace. I missed him though, so I drew this gift for him. He was super thrilled with the drawing when he got back home.

The principal of Bartley Secondary School is leaving for another school. One of the teacher contacted me to do a caricature of her as a parting gift. I drew in the passing of baton, which pleasantly represents the situation. They liked it very much.
