Excerpt from exhibition catalogue:
Are we bound by purpose? In this installation, Kamal stitched his batik painting onto numerous bricks, giving a most basic and conventional form a new façade, hence challenging our perception of its function. The batik paintings are also taken out of the typical presentation mode – within a picture frame – and returned to its original purpose: attire adorning a body.
This installation questions our perception of form, function and identity. Kamal is presently investigating the medium of Batik and its application in contemporary art practice. His work mostly concerns issues of identity and cultural diversity.
